Love God and Love Others

God’s Master Plan

The Ten Commandments

If the people you loved were heading for the edge of a cliff, wouldn’t you try to stop them? Well, that’s kind of like what God did when he wrote the Ten Commandments on those stone tablets. God loves us and wants us to be happy and safe. So he wrote down 10 rules to live by. Read all ten commandments in Exodus 20:1-17

Make a stone tablet of your own!

Check a narrow cardboard box lid for holes. (Tape any holes on the back of the lid.) Cut a strip of poster board, and tape it to the inside of the lid to form a rounded top. Coat the inside of the lid with petroleum jelly. Mix one cup plaster of Paris and 2/3 cup water in a bowl you can throw away. DO NOT let any of the mixture go down the drain! Use self-hardening clay instead of plaster if you want.

FAMILY CHALLENGE:

Look for ways to affirm each other as family members love God and others. Point out specific instances when it was clear that a family member put God first or set aside a personal need to meet the needs of someone else. For example, when you see your brother giving his allowance to a neighbor, you can tell him how great it is that he’s showing love to God and the neighbor by giving.

Pour the mixture in the box lid, and let it harden for an hour. Then carefully tear off the cardboard lid.

Now read Deuteronomy 6:5 and Matthew 22:37-40.

What’s the greatest commandment? Write it on your tablet in pencil, and then scratch the letters into the plaster. Keep the tablet in your room to remind you how God wants you to live!

The Cheerful Giver

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.
